They are much more functional than the average grill, but also more costly.

A casual cook knows what a pain it can be to go in and out of the house, finding ingredients and bringing them to and from the grill. A gas grill gets a poor reputation for not being able to cook meat in a way that traps in flavor. With a smoker grill type, the grill is able to trap in flavors of wood and charcoal into the meat. Gas grill islands defy the established norm by also tacking on a smoker to the main grill compartment- allowing for the best of both worlds. Chefs will appreciate the new methods of cooking they can now control.

Look for a gas grill island that is also mobile. Some come, and when assembled, are going to be hard to move. The ideal gas grill island will have wheels or at least handles on it that will make for easy moving. Otherwise you could be stuck with an overweight mass that is impossible to move from one side of the deck to another.

Gas grill islands are a joy to have for someone who grills enough to actually make use of all the features they provide. If you are more of a casual cook, then you are likely to get more use out of a less flashy grill.
